Cane swords (or swordsticks) emerged in 17th-19th century as concealed, self-defense weapons disguised as daily walking sticks. They gained popularity among the aristocracy and upper class when carrying visible swords became less socially acceptable, offering a stylish, discreet way to protect oneself in cities.
